Reporting a bug

Three things make a report easy to act on, and without them a fix usually takes a round trip to work out what happened:

  • Your macOS version, from the Apple menu, About This Mac.
  • Your MDView version, from the MDView menu, About MDView.
  • The document itself, if you are able to share it. A document that renders wrongly is far quicker to diagnose than a description of how it looks.

Questions people actually ask

Why does my CSV not save by itself?
Because it should not. Markdown documents autosave in place, the way macOS document apps normally do. CSV files do not, deliberately: a stray keystroke in a grid is far harder to notice than one in a text document, and these files often live in version control. Press Command-S. The window footer says when there are unsaved changes.
How do I add or delete a row or column in a CSV?
Select a row, or click a cell to target its column, then use the Edit menu or right-click the grid. The commands name what they will act on — Delete Column “price” rather than just Delete Column — so there is no guessing. A row you did not touch is written back byte for byte, so adding a row still leaves a one-line diff. Adding or deleting a column necessarily rewrites every line, because a column touches every row.
Why does a single Enter not create a line break?
Because that is the CommonMark rule, and it is how GitHub renders your README. A blank line starts a new paragraph; two trailing spaces make a hard break. The preview deliberately matches the destination, so what you see here is what your reader will see there.
Why did it ask for access to a folder?
Under the macOS App Sandbox, opening one file grants access to that file alone. A document that references local images needs permission for the folder those images live in, or they cannot be displayed. Granting is optional, it applies to that folder only, and the app never asks for anything else.
Why does the editor pane not appear when I open a file?
By design. Documents open as rendered reading, because reading is what you usually came to do. Press Option-Command-Return, or use the Edit button in the toolbar, to bring the source up beside the rendering.
Does it work offline?
Always. It has never worked any other way. MDView makes no network connections at all, so being offline changes nothing about how it behaves.
How do I go back to a previous version of a document?
File > Revert To, which is the standard macOS document behaviour. File > Open Recent and File > Duplicate work the way they do in any other document-based Mac app.
Why does it offer to save a document I did not change?
Because undo does not currently clear the edited marker. If you type something and then undo it, the document still counts as edited, so closing it asks whether to save. Nothing is wrong with your file and nothing is lost — choose Don't Save, or save it and the contents will be identical. It is a known rough edge in 1.0.

What is not in 1.0

Said plainly, so nothing here is a surprise after you buy it.

Quick Look previews
Pressing space on a file in Finder does not preview it yet. Planned for 1.1.
Sorting or filtering CSV columns
CSV files open in an editable grid, and rows and columns can be added or deleted, but columns cannot be sorted or filtered yet.
A settings panel
There is nothing to configure yet. The rendering follows your system appearance automatically.
Find and replace
Find works across both panes. Replace does not exist.

Version history

1.0
The first release. Rendering with GitHub-flavoured markdown, syntax highlighting, task lists, footnotes, tables, Mermaid diagrams and KaTeX math. Side-by-side editing with synchronised scrolling and a Format menu. Find across both panes. CSV files in an editable grid, with rows and columns you can add or delete and saves that leave untouched rows byte for byte. Print, Export as PDF and Copy as Rich Text. Live reload that never overwrites unsaved work.
